A Holistic Approach to Digital Marketing for Small Businesses
You would have heard many times over one or more of the following statements;
“Content is King”
“You HAVE to have a social media presence”
“E-mail marketing has the best ROI”
“You need to optimise your website for Google”
“Every business should be writing regular blogs”
And holy moly, this makes the digital space feel overwhelming!
With Facebook & Instagram introducing new features and regularly updating their algorithms – which shake up the social game big time…
To Google updating its search ranking algorithm hundreds of time of a year and constantly raising the bar on how to rank…
As well as the mind-boggling amount of content that has been created and swamped audiences, making cut-through even harder to achieve…
It can feel like there’s no right way to implement digital marketing for your business, and that whatever you do is going to be harder to achieve the desired results with.
This is kind of true actually 🙁
Customers have raised the bar on what they expect from businesses. They expect a user-friendly, mobile-friendly website, they’re going to check out your social presence and vibe out your business, they have heaps of e-mails coming through every day and they’re keeping an eye on those subject lines for a juicy hook.
And this is why holistic digital marketing is so important!
The bar has been raised! You cannot rely on one avenue of digital marketing to support your business and growth… and if you do, you’re playing a risky game.
As mentioned, social media platforms and Google are constantly refining their algorithms and introducing changes, if your business is reliant on these channels… you’re at their mercy!
But, on the flipside you cannot just stick to word-of-mouth and delivering email marketing to your existing client base… that won’t help to consistently attract new clients and spur growth!
Customers are comfortable with each of these platforms, they’re using all of them regularly and at different stages within their customer journey.
Whether they have an initial idea and jump onto Google to find out more information and research, to then checking out and engaging with your social accounts and blogs as they consider your offering, to turning into a repeat customer post-purchase as they’re nurtured through a longer-term email strategy.
You cannot show up in one way and expect to attract, nurture and retain customers.
The online customer journey is more complex than just your website, Instagram account or single follow-up email.
We’re all bombarded with information and advertising throughout the day and unless we’re able to repeatedly see the same businesses time and again in a myriad of relevant and engaging ways… we’re going to forget about them and fall victim to the next shiny brand that pops up.
It’s sad, but true.
Incorporating a holistic digital strategy into your marketing plan will ensure that your business is showing up in the right ways and at the right time to support customers through their buyer journey and enable a relationship to grow.
As mentioned, the bar has been raised – customers want more than just pretty aesthetics or direct email promotions. They want an experience, one that authentically represents who you are as a brand and guides them through their customer journey.
Don’t make it hard for your customers!
Make it easy for them to find you online, to engage with and understand your brand, to learn and appreciate your knowledge and expertise and to then become a happy customer – who’s prompted at the right time to come back again and continue their consumer journey with you.
This is why I’m a big advocate for a holistic approach to digital marketing for small businesses. You need to be looking at the bigger picture and considering the ways in which your brand can connect with your ideal audience.
I work with businesses across all aspects of digital marketing, helping to ensure they’re doing the best they can and not putting all their eggs in one basket, while potential customers are lost on another channel.
